The art’n’life initiative aims to enhance learning by offering engaging art history courses focused on the Renaissance, Baroque, and other art historical periods. It strives to nurture creativity by designing hands-on drawing classes and including diverse artistic media to facilitate artistic skill growth and self-development. Our programme includes online talks and interactive courses for learners who wish to engage online. Partnership with art schools and societies ensures tailored content for specific educational needs. Immersive experiences, such as specialised art history tours in Italy or visits to museums and galleries in England, deepen understanding and appreciation of art. Finally, the initiative aspires to build a vibrant community for artists, educators, and students to connect, learn, and grow.

Approach

Discover how lines can create different effects such as contour, gesture, and texture, conveying movement, structure, and emotion. Understand the unique qualities of charcoal and pencil, including their texture, blending capabilities, and tonal range for achieving various drawing effects.

Enhance your observational skills by closely studying natural objects, such as plants, flowers, and landscapes. Examine how variations in tone can create illusions of space, light, and volume in a composition.

Get acquainted with various genres, such as still-life and portraiture. Study the human form and experience modes of expression in monochrome or colour. The classes are designed to deepen your understanding and mastery of visual art, offering a rich journey through different techniques and styles.

Weekly Classes
Outline of the Course

Exploring Lines

  • Contour Drawing: Exercises that focus on drawing the outlines of objects helping participants understand the shapes and forms of different objects by paying attention to their edges.

  • Gesture Drawing: Introduction to quick sketches that capture the movement and posture of figures, to help loosen up and focus on the overall essence of the subject rather than fine details.

  • Texture Techniques: Experiment with lines to create different textures and patterns, to learn how to use lines to suggest different surfaces and materials.

Charcoal and Pencil

  • Charcoal Techniques: The use of charcoal for blending, shading, and creating a wide range of tones. The focus is on the charcoal for both broad strokes and fine details.

  • Pencil Techniques: Precision with pencils, focusing on hatching, cross-hatching, and the use of pressure to create depth and texture, to help understand how to build up tonal values gradually.

Drawing from Nature

  • Studying Natural Objects: Drawing plants, flowers, and landscapes, paying attention to the details and forms found in nature, to improve the ability to capture realism.

  • Tonal Variation: Exploring how changes in light and shadow can create the illusion of space and volume, to observe how light interacts with different surfaces and how to represent this in drawings.

Light & Shadow

  • Chiaroscuro Techniques: Introduce the concept of chiaroscuro, the contrast between light and dark to create a sense of depth.

  • Volume Creation: Practice shading techniques to give objects a three-dimensional appearance. This session will focus on understanding how light falls on objects and how to represent that in drawings.

Still-Life Composition

  • Objects: Basics of composition, arranging objects for a still-life drawing, balance, focal points, and the use of negative space.

  • Capturing Detail: Focus on the intricate details of everyday objects, to observe the subject.

Portraiture

  • Understanding Proportions: Study the human form and facial features, emphasising the correct proportions.

  • Expressive Techniques: Explore how to convey emotion and character through line, shading, and other drawing techniques.
